How to choose a bikini top and bottom that actually flatters your shape
If you've ever stood in front of a mirror holding two bikinis, wondering which one is actually going to work for you, you're not alone. Bikini shopping isn't about finding the "right" body for a swimsuit — it's about finding the right swimsuit for your body. The cut, the strap style, the rise of the bottoms — small details make a massive difference in how a piece sits, supports, and feels.
Because every Nostalgia piece is handmade to order, you're not stuck choosing from whatever's left on a rack. You can mix tops and bottoms, pick your fabric, and build a set that's tailored to how you actually want it to fit. Here's how to figure out what that looks like for you.
First, a Quick Note on "Body Types"
Body shape categories (pear, apple, hourglass, etc.) are a useful shorthand, not a rulebook. They're a starting point for understanding proportion and balance — not a box you have to fit into. The goal of this guide isn't to tell you what you "should" wear. It's to explain why certain cuts create certain effects, so you can use that knowledge however you want — whether that means following the suggestion or doing the exact opposite because you love how it looks on you.
1. Pear Shape (Hips Wider Than Bust)
If your hips are your widest point and your shoulders/bust are narrower, the general goal is to add visual width up top and keep the bottom streamlined.
Look for:
- Tops with horizontal detail, fuller coverage, or an underwire-style band — our Fiji Top and Miami Top both have a fuller triangle cut that adds presence on top
- Bottoms with a moderate or low rise and minimal ruching on the hips — the Sorrento Bottoms or Venice Bottoms keep the hip area clean and simple
- Side-tie bottoms in a darker or solid tone if you want the bottom half to recede slightly next to a brighter top
Skip (if balance is your goal): heavily embellished or ruched bottoms paired with a minimal top — it pulls the eye downward and exaggerates the width difference.
2. Apple Shape (Fuller Midsection, Slimmer Hips and Legs)
If you carry more through the waist and midsection, the goal is usually to elongate the torso and draw attention to your legs or shoulders.
Look for:
- Halter-style tops with adjustable ties — the Bora Bora Top and Mykonos Top both tie at the neck, which elongates the torso and adds vertical line
- A high-cut leg on the bottoms — the Bali Bottoms or Capri Bottoms show more leg, which balances proportions beautifully
- Darker or solid colours through the middle, saving bold prints for the top or bottom edges
Try: a reversible set so you can wear the bold side on the bottom and a more solid colour on top (or vice versa) depending on the day.
3. Hourglass Shape (Bust and Hips Similar Width, Defined Waist)
Hourglass shapes generally look great in almost anything, since the natural waist definition is already doing a lot of the work. The main goal here is just not to hide it.
Look for:
- Fitted, structured tops rather than oversized or baggy cuts — the St. Tropez Top or Malibu Top sit close to the body without flattening your shape
- Side-tie or cheeky bottoms that sit at the natural waist — Monaco Bottoms or Maldives Bottoms hit right at that narrow point
- Matching sets if you want a classic, put-together look, or mismatched sets if you want to play with colour
4. Athletic / Rectangle Shape (Bust, Waist, and Hips Similar Width)
If your shoulders, waist, and hips are all roughly the same width, the goal is usually to create the illusion of curves at the waist.
Look for:
- Tops with ruching, ring details, or asymmetric ties that add visual texture — the Vegas Top with its zigzag embroidery or the Micro Mykonos Top with its sequin shimmer both add dimension
- Bottoms with side ties that can be cinched higher or lower to create a waist illusion — Ibiza Bottoms and Cabo Bottoms are both fully adjustable
- High-waisted or higher-rise bottoms if you want more definition through the middle
5. Fuller Bust
If you're looking for more support and coverage on top, the goal is structure without sacrificing comfort.
Look for:
- Wider straps and a fuller triangle cut — the Fiji Top and Miami Top offer more coverage and a slightly more supportive fit than our smaller styles
- Bottoms with a bit more coverage to balance the proportions, like Seychelles Bottoms or Amalfi Bottoms
- Since everything is made to order, you can also leave a note at checkout with your exact bust measurement for a more tailored fit — we're happy to accommodate
6. Petite Frame
If you're working with a smaller frame, the goal is usually to avoid overwhelming proportions and let smaller, delicate details shine.
Look for:
- Triangle tops with delicate ties rather than bulky hardware — the Mykonos Top or Malibu Top keep things light and proportionate
- Lower-rise, minimal-coverage bottoms like Valencia Bottoms to avoid visually shortening the leg line
- Smaller-scale prints or solid colours, since larger prints can sometimes overwhelm a petite frame
The Real Secret: Mixed Sizing
Here's something most swimwear brands won't tell you because it doesn't work with off-the-rack sizing: your top size and your bottom size don't have to match.
Most bodies aren't perfectly symmetrical between bust and hip measurements, which is exactly why our Size Guide recommends sizing your top to your bust and your bottom to your hip — independently of each other. Because every piece is made to order in Canada, this isn't a workaround. It's just how we build every single order.
Quick fit tips:
- Between sizes? Size up for comfort.
- Want something more custom? Leave your exact measurements in the order notes at checkout.
- Still not sure? Message us on Instagram or email hello@nostalgiaswimwear.com before you order — we'll help you figure it out.
Build Your Set
The best bikini for your body type isn't a single product — it's a combination only you can build. Start with a top that fits the support and shape you want, then choose a bottom rise and coverage level that feels right for you. Mix prints, mix solids, or keep it classic with a matching Bikini Set.
